Fallout 4 · Windows PC · Version 1.1.0
Windwalker
Ski across the Commonwealth. Carve for speed. Take the fight into the air.
Windwalker brings Hope’s skiing and momentum-based flight into Fallout 4. Build speed on hills and through turns, carry it into flight, and keep using your weapons as you move.
Install with a mod manager
- Close Fallout 4. Install the matching F4SE release using its instructions. Its loader belongs beside
Fallout4.exe, with its supplied scripts in the game’sDatafolder. - Install the matching Address Library through your mod manager.
- Download the Windwalker ZIP above. In Vortex, use Install From File, select the ZIP, then enable and deploy it. In Mod Organizer 2, use Install a new mod from an archive, select the ZIP, and enable the mod.
- Open your manager’s Plugins list and make sure Windwalker.esp is enabled.
- Launch F4SE from your mod manager. If you use Mod Organizer 2, launch F4SE through that same profile so it can see your installed mods.
The included settings are ready to use, with no control remapping needed. The companion is a light plugin containing one hidden fall-protection perk.
Install manually
With F4SE and Address Library installed and the game closed, extract the ZIP. Copy its F4SE folder and Windwalker.esp into Fallout 4/Data. The result should include:
Fallout 4/
f4se_loader.exe
Data/
Windwalker.esp
F4SE/Plugins/
HopeFallout4.dll
HopeFallout4.ini
version-1-11-240-0.binEnable Windwalker.esp. For a fully manual setup, add *Windwalker.esp on its own line in %LOCALAPPDATA%/Fallout4/plugins.txt while the game is closed. Preserve the other entries; the leading asterisk enables the plugin.
Start the game with f4se_loader.exe. You can make a desktop shortcut to that file. The two HopeFallout4 files are Windwalker; their filenames are kept for compatibility.
Your first run
- Load a save and find some open ground.
- Press F6. You should see Windwalker on.
- Hold Shift or middle mouse to ski, build momentum, and hold Jump to take off. Carve with your movement keys and mouse. Lift uses speed, so a slow takeoff will not carry you far.
Windwalker starts off on a new save and remembers its toggle when you save. If it is already on, pressing F6 turns it off.
Controls
- F6
- Turn Windwalker on or off.
- W / A / S / D
- Move and steer. Coordinate A / D with mouse turns to carve.
- Shift or middle mouse
- Hold either to ski while Windwalker is on. Use slopes and carving to build speed.
- Jump (Space by default)
- Take off, then hold to fly. Release to descend.
- Mouse
- Look and guide your flight path.
- Normal weapon controls
- Aim, fire, and reload while skiing or flying.
Either Shift key and middle mouse are held ski shortcuts while Windwalker is on. Your Sprint action also skis, including a remapped key or controller button. Movement and Jump follow the game’s bindings. A keyboard is needed for F6.
Fly, fight, and land
Windwalker blocks falling damage only. Weapons, enemy damage, health, ammunition, and AP keep their normal behavior. You can shoot from the air, and enemies can still hurt you.
Turn Windwalker off in midair and fall protection stays with you through that landing. Once you settle on solid ground, ordinary falling damage returns. Radiation and other hazards remain dangerous.
God mode is no longer required. If you enabled it for an earlier release, turn it off to restore normal combat; Windwalker does not change that setting for you.
If something is not working
- F6 does nothing
- Make sure you launched through F4SE, the mod is enabled, and the game has focus with its menus closed. Check the exact game version and the matching Address Library.
- Windwalker asks for Windwalker.esp
- Enable the companion in your Plugins list. Movement stays disabled until its fall-protection perk is available.
- “Windwalker on” appears, but movement is normal
- Check that Windwalker.esp is enabled. Leave power armor, water, furniture, VATS, and menus before trying again. Release and press your movement keys again.
- Flight will not hold you up
- Build speed by skiing first. Hold Jump while flying and avoid spending all your momentum in a steep climb.
- The game was updated
- This release only supports 1.11.240. Disable Windwalker until a compatible release is available.
For support, use the contact form and include your game version and Documents/My Games/Fallout4/F4SE/HopeFallout4.log.
Compatibility, updates, and removal
Windwalker pauses custom movement in menus, VATS, water, furniture, and power armor. Swimming and power armor movement are not included. Avoid combining it with another mod that takes over player movement. Other mod combinations have not been broadly tested.
Updating from 1.0: close the game, replace the previous Windwalker mod with this ZIP, and enable the new Windwalker.esp. God mode is no longer required.
To remove it: turn Windwalker off with F6, land, and wait a second on solid ground. Save and close the game. Disable and remove it through your mod manager. For manual removal, remove its entry from plugins.txt, delete Data/Windwalker.esp, and delete only HopeFallout4.dll and HopeFallout4.ini from Data/F4SE/Plugins. Leave F4SE and Address Library installed if other mods use them.
About the project
Created by Spencer Barnes, Windwalker adapts Hope’s skiing, carving, and momentum-based flight to Fallout 4’s existing world and collision. Version 1.1 adds automatic fall protection and held Shift or middle-mouse skiing, while retaining the movement tuned through hands-on playtesting. Built with CommonLibF4 and F4SE.
